Green thumbs get active to help the local frogs

Rocks Riverside Park received a green boost on Thursday 21 July 2011 when 25 volunteers from AMP Capital volunteered their time with a native planting.  This corporate event is part of National Tree Day which is celebrated on 31 July.  It was coordinated by WaCC.

The volunteers stemmed from Sydney, Gold Coast, Bundaberg and Brisbane and by day’s end had planted about 250 native grasses, shrubs and trees.  Among the species planted were Grevillia, Bottlebrush (Melaleuca), Lilly Pilly (Syzygium), Kangaroo grass (Themada), Grey Myrtle (Backhousia) and Westringia.

Brett Malcolm from the Wolston and Centenary Catchments (WaCC) was thrilled with the extra helping hands as it complements a frog pond directly below the planting site.

“Today’s project provides a platform for WaCC and AMP Capital to work together to increase frog biodiversity within our precious catchment”, said Mr Malcolm.

As well as increasing habitat for frogs and other native animals, the planting will also provide valuable shade, act as a carbon sink and improve water quality in the Brisbane River.

Platypus sightings at Pooh Corner!

posted 24 Nov 2010 06:41 by Ed Parker

There has been not one, but two sightings of Platypus at Pooh corner (Sandy Creek) recently.  In both cases they were spotted by a BCC contractor (Ecosure) who were hired to do some bush rehabilitation and restoration.

Back in July we held a Platypus workshop with WPSQ experts, but on that particular occasion we were not able to make any sightings.

So it is great news to hear that indeed we do have Platypus in our local creeks.

Jindalee Creek WaCC Walk - held Sat, 8th May 2010

posted 9 May 2010 15:24 by Ed Parker

Some twenty people attended the WaCC Walk on Saturday afternoon, 8th May 2010 led by Henrik Maier.  The purpose of the walk was to enjoy the beautiful park and bushland along the upper reaches of Jindalee Creek between Ashridge Rd, Darra, and the Edenbrooke lake.  The group also inspected the areas which suffered sediment damage to bushland adjacent to CSR site during construction of the adjacent industrial subdivision. We ran out of time to complete the walk to the Edenbrooke lake. It was resolved to defer that to a future visit to check the status of the creek and algae issues there.
